Safety in Bear Country
The following pages contain practical information for anyone living, working or recreating in bear country. The first section provides general information to anyone intending to spend time on foot in areas where there are bears. This includes a broad range of recreationalists, such as hikers, campers, fishermen,cyclists etc. The ensuing sub-sections then provide specifc details about what to do in the event of encounter, and then attack, by black or grizzly bears. Further sections describe appropriate use of two of the most effective general means of repelling a bear attack; bear spray and bear bangers.
The next main section is directed at people who live in bear country, providing them with information on how to prevent bears being attracted and becoming habituated to their properties. It also encourages vigilance on the part of householders and describes how people can live sustainably, avoiding conflict, in bear country. Information is also provided on the various equipment that is available for deterring bears, and critique of the different items is provided. In addition, information is provided about Ursus International's Non-lethal Bear Management Training Programme and the various workshops available through it.
